Decree-Law 67/2021, of 30 July, establishes the regime and defines the governance model for promoting technology-based innovation through the creation of technological free zones.
TFZs are physical environments for testing, geographically located, in a real or near-real environment, intended for the testing of innovative technology-based technologies, products, services and processes by their promoters, in a safe and secure manner, with the support and monitoring of the respective competent authorities. The decree-law does not create the TFZs, but establishes the conditions for their creation with the aim of setting up several TFZs in Portugal, each one of them specially oriented towards certain technologies or sectors and therefore contributing to the dynamization of the regions of Portugal by leveraging their specific characteristics.
The present Decree-Law opens new horizons, establishing an innovative legal framework, unparalleled in other countries, to speed up research, demonstration, and testing processes in the country and, consequently, its competitiveness and attractiveness for research and innovation projects.
