If you’re like many small business owners, you don’t offer a 401(k) plan to employees. Why not? Well, you think you have too few employees, for one reason. Matching contributions would be a financial stretch. And then there are the administrative responsibilities!
Only 10 percent of businesses that employ 10 to 100 people offer 401(k) plans, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office data. But that doesn’t mean small business owners don’t recognize the value of retirement plans. You’d be offering a triple tax savings that is portable from job-to-job, has a lot of appeal to employees of any age and provides a painless way to save, whether for health needs or for retirement.
A growing number of advisors are focusing on small businesses with 401(k) plans that are often referred to as “microplans” that represent assets that are generally under $1 million.
