Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp Launches Homeland Security & Regulatory Practice
to Help Companies Comply with U.S. Anti-Terrorism and National Security Legislation
TAGLaw's Los Angeles member firm, Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP (MS&K), a leading California-based law firm that has provided integrated legal and business solutions to clients for more than 100 years, today announced that it has formed an interdisciplinary practice group to counsel clients on the various transactional and regulatory challenges created by recent homeland security legislation.
MS&K’s new Homeland Security & Regulatory Practice consists of a team of experienced lawyers with substantial expertise in the security services industry, and particular skills in the areas of immigration and international trade. The practice group is co-chaired by corporate department head Lessing Gold, international trade counsel Susan Ross and immigration practice leader Frida Glucoft, and taps into the expertise of more than twenty MS&K lawyers in the firm’s Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C. offices.
“Since the events of 9/11, Congress and the state legislatures have passed a sweeping range of new laws that impose serious compliance requirements on both U.S. and foreign-owned businesses, which are administered by the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies with related responsibilities,” said Gold. “We have served as counsel to the security services industry for more than 50 years and regularly advise clients on a wide range of legal issues within the security, manufacturing, trade and defense areas. Our newly established Homeland Security & Regulatory Practice is well-positioned from day one to assist clients to identify private financing and government contract opportunities, as well as to respond to regulatory inquiries, internal and external investigations, compliance audits, and enforcement actions of both a civil and criminal nature.”
According to the Homeland Security Research Corp. (HSRC), from 2007 to 2011, an estimated $123 billion will be spent by U.S. government agencies on homeland security programs, technologies and other required investments. Another $28.5 billion is projected to be spent in that same five-year period by companies in the private sector.
“The growing U.S. focus on national security and anti-terrorist protections has resulted in new and expanded federal powers to control the movement of goods across and within our borders,” said Ross. “This has had a dramatic impact on international trade and commerce, requiring both the U.S. government and companies doing business in the U.S. to fund new systems and comply with new and complex regulations.”
“Concern for homeland security is perhaps most evident in the increasing complexity and uncertainty surrounding the legal process for immigration into the U.S.,” Glucoft stated. “Our Homeland Security & Regulatory Practice offers seasoned expertise and a nuanced understanding of the hurdles employers now face in recruiting technical and creative employees into the country for short- or long-term stays.”
