With our 50-member team comprised of participants and fundraising volunteers, Fillmore Riley LLP has committed to raising substantial funds for CancerCare Manitoba.
Through past participation in the Challenge for Life Walk and the Dragon Boat Festival, we have raised almost $200,000 that went towards helping Manitobans of all ages affected by cancer. Our 2018 goal is to raise at least $50,000, bringing the total funds raised to $250,000.
We selected a team name that’s appropriate for our profession: Motion to Strike Cancer. In court, a motion to strike is a legal motion made by a party to have an entire cause of action removed or “stricken” from the court record. Fillmore Riley’s Motion to Strike Cancer wants to see cancer-stricken or eradicated so no community has to deal with the ravages of the disease.
“Giving back to the community is important to Fillmore Riley,” said Motion to Strike Cancer’s team captain, Wes Burrows, a partner of Fillmore Riley. “We have a longstanding relationship with the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. Most of us have been affected by cancer and the funds we raise will go towards prevention through education, early detection, state-of-the-art research, and world-class treatment and patient support.”
Motion to Strike Cancer has 30 team members who have each committed to raise $500 and to either “walk it” or “work it” on June 9, 2018. With the help of our 20-member fundraising team, Motion to Strike Cancer will exceed the $15,000 minimum we must raise as a team.
“The Motion to Strike Fundraising Team has come up with creative fundraising initiatives. They’re committed to making a difference in the lives of Manitobans touched by cancer and they’re working hard to make each initiative a success,” said Nicolle Brockie, chair of the fundraising team and general manager of Fillmore Riley. “Our involvement with Challenge for Life 2.0 also aligns with our Wellness Program. Many of our team members are making positive lifestyle changes such as getting more exercise and making healthy eating choices.”
Fillmore Riley will also host a tent where our volunteers will provide drinks and snacks to the “Work It” participants. “It’s great to have the opportunity to interact with members from other organizations when we hand out snacks and refreshments. Participants feel good about how they’ve made a difference and the event has such positive energy,” said Nicolle.
