Coblentz Counsels San Francisco 49ers in Deal for $1.2 Billion Santa Clara Stadium

The development of a new stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., to become the home of the San Francisco 49ers, took a huge step forward as the official groundbreaking ceremony took place on the site April 19, 2012. Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass acted as real estate and corporate counsel to the NFL team and its affiliates throughout the high-profile project, initiated in 2007. Construction on the state-of-the-art, 68,000-seat stadium is scheduled for completion by the start of the 2014-2015 season.

Harry O’Brien, a Coblentz partner and land use and real estate lawyer, served as lead counsel on the project, overseeing all aspects of the negotiations and final agreements, ranging from environmental review and zoning to the negotiation of the leases and related transactions for the development and operation of the stadium. Other key members of the Coblentz team involved in the project were Name Partners Pamela Duffy and Jonathan Bass; Partners Alan Gennis, Jeffrey Maso, Douglas Sands, Venessa Henlon, Sara Finigan, and Howard Lasky; and Associates Robert Hodil, Misti Schmidt and Todd Hovey. In his remarks at the ground breaking ceremony, Jed York, CEO of the 49ers, expressed his gratitude to the Coblentz firm and Harry O'Brien for their work on the project.

“We are thrilled to have played a part in helping to create a world-class venue for the San Francisco 49ers and their fans. At Coblentz, Patch Duffy & Bass, we take great pride in having been involved in some of the most complex, large-scale real estate and land use projects on the West Coast. It has been tremendously satisfying for us to use that experience to help make this exciting project a reality. We congratulate the San Francisco 49ers and the City of Santa Clara on this landmark achievement,” said Harry O'Brien.

Members of Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass’ Real Estate and Land Use Practice Group have played an active role in a number of Northern California’s largest commercial and residential development projects and transactions, including Tejon Ranch Company's land conservation agreement, eBay Inc.’s major campus expansion in San Jose, the San Francisco Giants’ AT&T Park and the 300-acre Mission Bay development project.
