With more than 35 years of professional experience and nearly 18 years as leader of the firm’s Tax and International Trade & Customs Practice Groups, Mauricio Piñeros assumes the managing partner position at Gómez Pinzón Abogados.
Piñeros arrives in a year of great challenges and reforms; he replaces José Luis Suárez, who has been Managing Partner of the firm since 2013 and who will continue as an active member of the firm’s Executive Committee, as well as partner in the Banking, Finance & Capital Markets practice group.
“As part of our corporate governance strategy, the firm’s managing partner changes every six years; This allows us to always have the best leaders, on this opportunity, is Mauricio Piñeros, one of the most reputable lawyers in Colombia, who has been associated with us for 19 years. Considering his trajectory and knowledge of the company, there is no one better to manage Gómez Pinzón Abogados”, stated former managing partner Jose Luis Suárez.
Piñeros has been a member of the firm Executive Committee and Partner Compensation and Assessment Committee. He has experience in M&A transactions, project finance and litigation. Mauricio has also served as general counsel in tax related services to several national and multinational companies. He brings to this role a comprehensive vision and practical knowledge of what a company needs to thrive in a competitive environment.
“I was appointed Co Managing Partner in 2020 and since then, I have worked very closely with Jose Luis on all the firm’s matters. Gómez-Pinzon’s corporate governance rules guarantee organized and sustainable growth in the long term, and we have indeed achieved a successful transition. I take on this new role in a challenging year, but I am confident that we will continue to position Gómez-Pinzón as the most efficient and profitable firm, but mainly l, the one that provides the best service to our clients,” – Said Mauricio Piñeros.
2023 the year of challenges
Mauricio Piñeros comes in to lead a team of professionals that he describes as agile, empowered, and committed. “This year the economic outlook is not promising. Recently, we have seen many restructurings, especially by family-owned companies, and we will continue to see this throughout the year. On the other hand, the mining and energy sector will be one of the most affected by the tax reform and we will surely see reactions this year. The objective for companies should be to evaluate the effect of the reform, which has a bias against investment”, said Mauricio Piñeros.
From Piñeros’ perspective, businessmen will have to work to remain consistent in spite of growing uncertainty: “The country has institutional strength but there will still be important changes, for some industry sectors it will be more difficult than for others, but I believe there is a sufficiently stable platform to continue doing business”, he concluded.
