Brad McCullough, Stan Reed Successfully Petition Maryland Court of Appeals to Review Firearm and Toolmark Identification Case

Appellate attorney Brad McCullough, with the assistance of litigator Stan Reed, successfully petitioned the Maryland Court of Appeals to review a case concerning “firearm identification,” i.e. the methodology used in trying to matcha bullet to the specific gun that supposedly fired it.

The appeal, featured in The Maryland Daily Record, focuses on the reliability of that methodology, which has come under serious scrutiny from the scientific community in recent years.

“In recent years, the technique has met with increasing scrutiny and skepticism from highly respected scientific authorities and its use has been increasingly restricted by courts throughout the country,” McCullough wrote in his petition.

According to the article, the Court of Appeals “without explanation, took the unusual step of agreeing to hear Abruquah’s appeal without it first being considered by the intermediate Court of Special Appeals.”
