Casner & Edwards LLP partner Sharon C. Lincoln spoke at the American Bar Association’s (ABA) online program, “Transformational Leadership – Making a Difference with Social Entrepreneurship,” June 8, 2020. Lincoln and fellow panelists discussed how best to advise transformational leaders who are driving organizational innovation through social entrepreneurship. In particular, the panel discussed factors that would be most important for startup social ventures, including choice of entity (for-profit or nonprofit), choice of venue, the importance of partnerships for young enterprises, and how best to measure impact. Lincoln was joined on the panel by Anna Ford, co-founder of Jet-Set Offset, LLC, a company that helps travelers mitigate their carbon footprint, Susan Musinsky, Executive Director of the Social Innovation Forum, and Michael Vargas from Rimon Law (moderator).
Lincoln advises nonprofit entities on the wide range of issues related to their tax-exempt status, including formation, funding, governance, executive compensation (including deferred compensation), regulatory compliance, restructuring, international grant making, lobbying, unrelated business income, and mergers and acquisitions. In addition, she assists clients in matters directly involving the Internal Revenue Service, the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, including audits, appeals and ruling requests.
The ABA is one of the largest voluntary professional membership organization in the world. As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law in a democratic society.
