Andrew is a partner in the Maritime and International Trade Law Practice of the firm. He has practised as an admitted attorney in South Africa for 25 years and specialises in all aspects of maritime and international trade law, and furthermore has a broad insurance practice, with particular emphasis on marine insurance.
He joined the firm of Adams & Adams in 1995 and became a partner in 1999. In 2006, he joined Cox Yeats and acts for both local and foreign clients. He represents all of the major South African insurers and advises them regularly in regard to insurance policy issues, claims under insurance policies and recovery actions against third parties. He acts on behalf of insurers in respect of claims that they pursue under subrogated rights, as well as defending claims against them, or their insured.
Andrew has been involved extensively in ship arrests, including in rem arrests, security arrests and associated ship arrests. He has also handled a number of ship sale applications and the enforcement of claims against funds established pursuant to such sales. He has been involved in a number of high profile maritime, marine insurance and commercial litigation cases in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg, including several appeals in the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa. He also represents a number of major South African companies that are involved in importing and exporting goods, in freight forwarding and in tank storage operations.
Andrew is a member of the Maritime Law Association of South Africa and the Durban Marine Insurance Association. He served as a member of the National Executive Committee of the Maritime Law Association of South Africa for 8 years between 2002 and 2010. He is a past treasurer of that organisation.
